What is Sublimation Printing?

Sublimation is a physical phenomenon where a solid turns directly into a gas without becoming a liquid first. In textile branding, we use special sublimation inks that, when exposed to heat and pressure, penetrate the material. This isn’t an ordinary print because the ink becomes part of the fabric itself, resulting in a durable and aesthetically pleasing finish.

How does sublimation work? The sublimation printing process

Sublimation is a printing technique where special dyes change from a solid to a gas state under heat. When it comes to textiles, the process looks like this:

  1. First, we create a design on a computer.
  2. The graphic is printed onto special transfer paper using sublimation inks. The image on the paper is a mirror reflection of what will appear on the product.
  3. The printed paper is placed onto the material we want to decorate.
  4. The item is placed into a heat press. High temperatures (around 180–210°C / 356–410°F) cause the solid dye to sublimate—that is, turn into gas.
  5. The gaseous dye penetrates the polyester fibres of the material.
  6. After removing from the press and cooling, the dye returns to a solid state—but now it’s embedded within the fabric fibres. This makes the print highly durable and undetectable to the touch.

What are the advantages of sublimation printing?

sublimation printing

Choosing sublimation printing for textile promotional products comes with many benefits:

  • The print won’t wash out, fade, or crack. It will look great for a long time.
  • We can print an unlimited number of shades, gradients, and extremely detailed graphics—even photographs.
  • The ink becomes part of the material, so the print doesn’t add texture.
  • The image can cover the entire surface of the product without any limits.
  • Logos and small elements appear exactly as intended—fine details are easy to reproduce.
  • Sublimation is perfect for personalization. We can print names, surnames, or numbers without sacrificing quality.

Materials suitable for sublimation printing

Sublimation works best on polyester or polyester-rich materials. That’s because under heat, polyester fibers open up, allowing the gaseous dye to enter and bond. This makes our textile promotional items ideal for sublimation printing. For example:

  • Sportswear made from moisture-wicking or thermal fabric;
  • Decorative polar fleece pillows and cushion covers;
  • High-quality microfiber towels.

Sublimation shows its full potential on light-colored materials. We do not print on dark surfaces, as they can affect the intensity and accuracy of colors. Sublimation inks are water-based, meaning they blend with the background color, so the final effect is a combination of the material color and the print. Some recycled materials are not perfectly white. They may have a slightly gray or beige tint. It’s worth knowing that prints on rPET materials may appear slightly muted or grayish.

Sublimation is a sophisticated and versatile tool for branding textile promotional products. Its durability, precision in reproducing colors and details, and ability to create unique, personalized designs make it a strategic choice for companies looking to effectively strengthen their brand.
